The Statistics on Homosexuality and its Effects

hey ladies,
I found this site that has some rediculous statistics on homosexuals, the worse one in my opinion is this one.
  • Homosexuals are 100 times more likely to be murdered (usually by another homosexual) than the average person, 25 times more likely to commit suicide, and 19 times more likely to die in a traffic accident.

I disagree with this statistic, homosexuals fall victim to hate crimes committed by radical hetersexuals, this has been going on dating back to stone wall days possibly before then. The crime rate against homosexuals have increased tremendously since then, to the point of establishing laws for protection, such as the hate crimes prevention act which included aiding homosexuals who are victims of violent crime because of their sexual orientaion, gender or because they are disabled. I found in 2009 alone there were 7783 hate crime incidents and 9691 victims of these crimes. With this information how are homosexuals 100 times more likely t o be murdered by another homosexual?

I agree these stats seem off somehow. if they are correct they are very alarming.

  2. I'd like to know where you got these stats, they seem a bit skewed, but like the person above said, they would be very disturbing if true. I recently did a research paper on hate crimes against LGBT and there were some suicide statistics given. I'll post the section of my paper that discusses suicide stats...

    2. Suicide Statistics – Attempted suicide statistics are generally higher among those in the LGBT community, especially the adolescents. According to one study, approximately 40% of the LGBT sample had thought about committing suicide, while only approximately 10% of the non-LGBT sample had previous thoughts of committing suicide. In regards to urban and rural LGBT, 42% of the sample had attempted suicide at least once in the past, and 32% of rural LGBT had at least one suicide attempt in their past (Waldo, et al., 1998). There is no direct connection between victimization and suicidal thoughts, but there seems to be an indirect connection in that the lowered self-esteem and higher psychological distress due to victimization cause more suicidality in victims (Waldo, et al., 1998).

these suicide stats are interesting and alarming. I think that there needs to be more research done on this and more information gathered thgat can be used to help educate people about the ramifications of hate crimes and anti-gay discourses
